View Photo »Just because we’re in [the playoff picture] right now doesn’t mean we’re in
I want the Kopitar line to be better, [Dustin] Brown and [Ryan Smyth ]
In today's game you need to capitalize on special teams, and we didn't do that ... We need to get back to the basics -- pressing and getting the puck to the net. We just needed to simplify the game a bit. We need to play more desperate. We had to play catch-up, and we didn't give a good enough push thro...
We needed (Smyth's) attitude to help us improve in that area, and also the attitude that's going to be contagious with the other members of our hockey club ... That they're going to learn and watch from Ryan Smyth and the style of game that he plays. He's done that.
We've got to play more desperate ... The beginning of first period they come out and score and the beginning of the third they come out and score, that's unacceptable. It puts you behind the eight-ball and you've got to play catch up.
We needed (Smyth's) attitude to help us improve in that area, and also the attitude that's going to be contagious with the other members of our hockey club ... That they're going to learn and watch from Ryan Smyth and the style of game that he plays. He's done that.
Just because we're in right now doesn't mean we're in ... We've got to play to catch the teams ahead of us instead of looking at the teams behind us.
I thought they were happy with me ... I loved it there. But I knew they needed a left winger, a scorer. They addressed it all year and at the end of the year in meetings they said they were going to go and get one. I didn't think they were going to trade me, but at the end of the day it was a huge compl...
Home ice is huge in today's game ... As it gets down to the finals, you get seeded by how you do during the year and that's why you play the whole season. You get rewarded for that and hopefully we can keep ourselves in the top four.
We thought that having Justin Williams for the whole year, and Ryan Smyth [would improve their five-on-five scoring] ... But a lot of people still doubted us since we didn’t get the big name—Marian Hossa or someone else.
The puck's got to end up at the net somehow ... Sometimes it's not going to be the prettiest goal. Grinding away down low in front of the net pays off. Whether you're a screen, or whether you get a rebound, those are precious opportunities (in big games). As we're getting into the stretch, (and) hopeful...
Even the players in there—they can come in, think they’re going to be better, they see Ryan Smyth in there. But until they go out there and do it, too, they’re not going to get that idea, ‘hey, we’re good.’ The player has to believe in himself, but then they ultimately have to believe in each other that...
We're excited to be home and wanted to respond for the fans and get them on our side but we just wanted to play simple and sometimes simple is the best way
The fit of [defenseman] Rob Scuderi and [left wing] Ryan Smyth —not only do we think they’re good players, but I’ve said it before, we think they fit with what we have
He's an elite player and for him to grab hold of 100 goals is awesome -- and counting ... He works hard not only offensively but defensively and he's a well-rounded hockey player.
We're sticking to the system and doing all the little things right. Everyone is contributing and sticking up While Simmonds' shot was from a bad angle, the Kings did the little things to set it up. Brad Richardson sealed off a Devils player and made the pass and Ryan Smyth provided a screen in front of ...
The longer the suspension
Then he hears the cat calls, that he can’t do it without Ryan Smyth ... He loves Ryan, but then he thinks, ‘I can do this without Ryan. I have to do this without Ryan.’ Then he starts pressing more.
The longer the suspension ... the players are going to try and think a little bit more.
I can say that part has been verified, based on what I see on the rink ... I feel good that if we go after it, it’s the right one. [But] these deals never come about when you want them. You just have to be patient, just like we were with Ryan Smyth. I’ve got to get the right guy.
He's very eager to compete and he doesn't quit ... He works so hard in practice, and he gets rewarded in the game. He didn't face a lot of shots, but you have to give credit to the defensemen back there for standing solid and helping them out. He's played really well this year and he's earned a spot on ...
The question starts out, when I stayed away from [high-priced unrestricted free agents] ‘you stuck to your guns on Ryan Smyth,’ ... That wasn’t hard, because I know what’s going to win. It’s hard if I let perception [takeover], but it was real easy. We [couldn’t] do it.
These guys are behind us in the standings and it's a matter of we've got to play desperate. We know we still have room but we don't want to look past ... We know the points are so important. Just getting back to a level of compete we're capable of doing on a nightly basis. This is playoff hockey now. Le...
Ryan Smyth is everything I want those guys to be about ... So to sacrifice a little talent to instill in Kopitar what it means to be a pro is worth ten times more than the twenty more goals I could get from some flash-and-dash guy who doesn’t care about his teammates.
I thought we had a hard-fought battle in Calgary. It was a physical, draining game
